RFID in EU

By Pierluigi Perri on

Mrs Viviane Reding, Commissioner for the Information Society and Media, is launching an open public consultation on the benefits and risks of RFID.

The main steps of the roadmap are the following: 1) in 2007 the Commission will institute a working party of experts on RFID technology to assist it in the elaboration of an European strategy on RFID. It will participate, among the other, the working group "article 29" on the data security; 2) by mid-2007 the Commission will propose, during the review of community standards on the telecommunications, some changes to the Directive 2002/58/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 12 July 2002 concerning the processing of personal data and the protection of privacy in the electronic communications sector (Directive on privacy and electronic communications), to take account of the RFID applications; 3) by the end of 2007 the Commission will publish, for the Member States and to the parties concerneds, a Recommendation concerning data protection and data security collected by "intelligent labels"; 4) with the group of the parties concerneds, the Commission will  analyse the economic and social effects of RFID and of other technologies, with particular attention to the  protection of personal data, to the trust of the citizens and to the public management. Such analysis will bring, by the end of 2008, to an evaluation of the possible political options and of the further eventually necessary legislative measures.
