New Role at Stanford

By Riana Pfefferkorn on

I’m thrilled to announce that after more than three great years with the Stanford Internet Observatory, as of this month I’ve joined the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI) as a Policy Fellow. Since 2018, some of my most impactful work has been on emergent legal and policy issues relating to AI (e.g., “deepfakes” in the courtroom, the coming wave of AI-generated CSAM). In my new role, I’ll get to expand on those threads and devote more of my time to studying AI’s effects on society and (hopefully) proposing solutions to mitigate its significant downsides that are already affecting real people, right now, today.

At the same time, protecting encryption — and digital privacy, civil liberties, and strong cybersecurity more broadly — has never been more urgent, and I’m going to continue pushing for a future that empowers human rights and human dignity against ever-increasing odds.

The past couple of months have been tumultuous, for the nation, for my workplace, and for me personally, and I’m grateful for the many kind words and notes of support I’ve received from friends and colleagues. I’m excited for my next chapter at the university that’s been my professional home for almost a decade, and looking forward to the part that many of you will play in it.
