Stanford CIS

demos at gnomdex (and their various ip terms of use)

By Colette Vogele on

second life - is cool. ip treatment is interesting. people in the world own all the ip they create. story of tringo guy - who made game that is a bingo + tetris. licensed it to nintendo. second life sees none of the revenue from that license. virtual economy is interesting too. i want to see the chris pirillo avatar. and, now, because i care about these things, the lengthy ip-related portions of the second life terms of service are found in section 3 at this link.

blue dot
on cover of today's business section in the Seattle PI. launching today. gives people their own homepage with people's content that they care about. the intersection of friends + network, which they call social discovery. the question that people want answered is "what can i learn from my friends?" i like the interface and how simple and easy it looks to use. here's their content/ip provision from their terms of use:

farecast
helps you find the best airfares. they can show you confidence in the cost of the price, they also show a history of airline over past 80 days. my dad will totally love this site! this sounds great for frequent travellers. i like it! they can help you decide when to travel in the future based on lower rate dates. i wonder if there's a way for the airlines to game this system? it doesn't look like it from the demo. they just completed their private beta, and have some stats from the beta. you can find it at the farecast blog. right now they only cover seattle and boston originations. so, the lesson they learned in beta is that the need more cities. YES, i agree. they need to get SFO, OAK and SJX for me alone :) Regarding terms of use, i didn't see a link to any on their home page. maybe they decided that they don't need one at this time, since users are just able to search around on the site.

pixie.com
this is "a next generation media search engine." they aggregate every photo and video they can get their hands on. it's a "snapshot of the visual web." i like their logo!. this product is offered through an ajax interface. users can query all sorts of things and then the company can link that to advertising. so if you search for "amsterdam" they can give you images, and link that to an expedia ad (i think this is what he said). they don't know yet exactly how to measure all the metrics and monetize all of this data. they are sorting results by more than just relevance. media search is about "discovery" and "entertainment", not just about a finding stuff. it's a gateway. (don't know i exactly agree with this view. i'm not just trying to be entertained... i acutally want to find what i'm looking for.) they are a "value added syndicator" of content across the web. and here are their license terms in their terms of use.

melodeo.com
this is a mobile podcasting compnay. about 5 months ago they got going on mobile podcasting.  they have taken mobile + podcasting + social networking and "pureed" them together. they are trying to create the best podcast listening experience on line. you can listen from their website (once you log in). you can create podcast playlists. you can browse and find friends. I can't seem to open their site at the moment, so can't get their terms of use... {ok, now it's later and I've been to their site but I don't see a "terms of use" on the home page. i think that's a mistake on their part.}

marc canter's people aggregator. i wasn't listening enough to say what canter's project is about... sorry. i was spending time trying to find the terms of use for melodeo. that was not very productive use of my time. i did hear him say that this project is all privately funded and he made fun of the blue bouncy ball from bluedot, which was funny.

todd cochrane's blubrry
podcasters will list with bluburry, bluburry goes out and get advertisers to advertise through the podcast. the podcaster can say no to the deal on a one-by-one basis. in return, the podcaster needs to say "i'm part of blubrry.com". i like todd. he wrote the first podcasting guide, and is the guy behind geek news central.  here's what their terms of use say:

legal@rawvoice.com.
