The EFF posted this very interesting article about the RIAA's filing in the DMCA rule-making proceedings -- apparently, the RIAA thinks that ripping my own CD's (CD's I've legitimately purchased) to put on my mp3 player is infringement. Even making back-up copies doesn't count as fair use according to this new and extreme stance taken by the RIAA. Hmmm... This argument seems so far removed from our understanding of infringement, one wonders what exactly the RIAA has in mind? Is the strategy to take an extreme stance so that when the compromise is said and done the outcome will be closer to what they wanted? The article is short...and worth reading.
Ripping my own CD's is infringment?!?
