Non-residential fellow Colette Vogele (resume-pdf) joined the Center for Internet and Society in 2004 with substantial experience counseling clients on intellectual property disputes.  Today she heads the firm Vogele & Associates advising clients on a range of intellectual property questions and related issues faced by individuals, businesses, and non-profit organizations. As a fellow, Ms. Vogele is drafting a legal guide to podcasting which will be completed in the fall of 2005.

During the 2004-2005 academic year, Ms. Vogele held a residential fellowship and lead litigation on two of the Center's copyright cases: Golan v. Gonzalez, a case challenging the constitutionality of Section 514 of the Uruguay Round Agreements Act (codified at section 104A of the Copyright Act), which removed thousands of works from the public domain, and Somma v. Great Ormond Street Hospital, a case in which the Center defended an author's right to build on works that have entered the public domain. The Golan case is now on appeal to the 10th Circuit and the Somma litigation resulted in a favorable settlement for the Center's client.

Prior to joining the Center,  Ms. Vogele litigated copyright and trademark cases at Preston Gates & Ellis LLP and managed anti-counterfeiting cases in several states on behalf of a software developer. She also worked with Weil Gotshal & Manges LLP in Silicon Valley litigating high tech patent and trade secret disputes in technical fields including medical devices, semiconductors packaging, circuit simulation software, and DVD technology.

Ms. Vogele grew up in the Pacific Northwest and is an Honors Program graduate in Political Science from the University of Washington.  She earned her law degree with honors at George Washington University Law School where she was the Executive Articles Editor for the American Intellectual Property Law Association Quarterly Journal, held two internships with the United States Department of Justice, and externed for a United States Magistrate Judge.
