digit- squatting

By Lauren Gelman on

He said: the digit-squatter sitting on 1-800-RED-CROSS tried to charge the Red Cross a seven-digit figure to turn over the number, which they desperately need to handle the overwhelming response in light of Katrina.  She said: The 11 digits were a legitimate purchase for a now defunct enterpise Red Arm (which happens to have the same digits), and they're happy to let the Red Cross use the number (as they always have during crisis) at cost.

digit-squatting? you decide.

I never knew the FCC had the jurisdiction to take away a toll-free number from a digit-squatter, as they voted unanimously to do here. So much for the deregulation-ists on the Commission. Seems all the rhetoric from conservatives about the power of the market washes away after a big storm (or when politics dictates).
