Apple's new operating system upgrade includes a powerful search facility. Apple explains why its search facility is superior to those recently offered by Google and Microsoft:
In desktop search, Apple is playing catch-up to Google and, to a lesser extent, Microsoft, both of which have introduced desktop search software in recent months. But because Spotlight is integrated into the core of the Mac operating system, instead of bolted on, as with Google and Microsoft, it provides faster and more extensive search results than its rivals, said Phil Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of worldwide product marketing.
But this is exactly Microsoft's argument for Windows Media Player--its integration into the OS means higher performance and quality. Operating systems expand naturally, and we should expect them to ingegrate additional features over time.
My view has always been that it seems odd to make Microsoft strip Media Player as the remedy for its abuse of its monopoly position. Rather Microsoft might be required to permit alternative media players the kinds of access and knowledge about its OS that they need to compete as effectively as possible.
