Historic Number of Votes Against Sitting President

President Bush's declaration of a "historic victory" must be tempered by the "historic rebuff" that he received.

I do not mean to impugn his victory, but rather the interpretation of a wide mandate for Bush's policies.

Note: Table shows votes for principal opponent to incumbent President. Actual number of votes would be higher if votes cast for third party candidates were included.  Data are from CNN.com.
