Last debate disappointments

By Colette Vogele on

So, it seems that the facts were on vacation last night.  The Washington Post has an article about this (see "Facts take a holiday in debate"), as does factcheck.org.

I was disappointed in how Kerry handled the last question about the "strong women" in his life.  Instead of  taking this opportunity to praise his family's role in his life and address the importance of the closest relationships in one's life, he started by cracking a tasteless joke about how he, President Bush and the moderator Bob Schieffer all "married up."  Here's exactly what he said (go here for the full debate transcript):

Well, I guess the president and you and I are three examples of lucky people who married up. (LAUGHTER) And some would say maybe me more so than others. (LAUGHTER) But I can take it.

I hate to admit that I thought Bush's response came across genuine.  He simply loves his wife and children.  If I were Theresa Heinz Kerry I'd be pissed off.  (And perhaps that's why I'm single.)
