Geist on solving Canada's culture deficit

By Stanford Center for Internet and Society on

New article by Michael Geist arguing that the benefits of Canadian authorship are being reaped more outside the country than in -- and that the parties pushing Canada to beef up its copyright protections are foreign media conglomerates seeking to further secure their profits. He argues that a U.K.-like approach to copyright will address these problems, but I confess that I don't quite see how. Will narrower copyright protection promote the growth of a Canadian media industry? Or is the idea to simply to leverage the marketability of Canadian artists to limit the power of extranational media companies? I understand the "fair dealing" issue (similar, but not identical, to U.S.'s "fair use"), but that seems separate from the economic argument Geist is trying to make. (Via Copyfight)
