Star Wars on DVD ... but Greedo shoots first

By Stanford Center for Internet and Society on

Quasi-confirmed reports that George Lucas has finally greenlighted the release of Star Wars IV-VI on DVD. The catch is that the only versions available will be the infamous "Special Editions," with cheesed-up CGI and the ludicrous scene in Mos Eisley where Greedo misses Han Solo from point blank range.

The /. reaction is notable ... the excitement you'd expect is tempered by a lot of  anger. The reason is the same one that /.ers are such rabid OSS advocates -- they resent Lucas's attempt to continue his hegemony over something that seems like it ought to belong to the world more broadly. A tiny analog of many modern copyright debates.
