Justin Hall studies and writes about digital culture. Called a “journalist of the future” for his early active publishing on the world wide web, Hall has translated an enthusiasm for participatory technology into a career studying social engagement with electronic media. Whether reporting on a Klingon Beauty Pageant from the DragonCon game convention or updating the web wirelessly from a snow festival in rural Japan, Hall is widely travelled both online and offline.
His articles covering the visions of “indie” media designers, the tribulations of professional video gamers, and the ethics of online publishing have appeared in print in the New York Times, Rolling Stone, Wired Magazine, J@panInc, the South China Morning Post, and on numerous web sites, including Salon, Feed, and Game Girl Advance. Hall has spoken on issues in digital culture to audiences both in North America and Europe. His past work includes a stint on the editorial staff of the first commercial content web site HotWired, a long working relationship with author Howard Rheingold, and time served as PlayStation Editor and Director of Innovation at the web’s largest aggregation of video game information Gamers.com in California. He spent much of 2001-2002 living in Tokyo, expanding his understanding of electronic entertainment in Korea and Japan. Today, Hall continues his research on his personal web site, Links.net.
