Jane Pinckard studies the intersections of international digital youth culture. Her graduate work in Japanese history at the University of California, Berkeley, informs her examination of the emergence of home video consoles and the exchange of fashion and media across the Pacific Ocean. To date her research and articles have appeared in edge publications like Bust, Mindjack, TheFeature, and Read Satellite. She has also been interviewed by print and television for commentary on the differences between the gaming markets in the east and the west, and the role of women as game players and developers. Currently she is interested in how technological tools build social worlds, in particular within the environment of a massively multiplayer game. She is working on a paper which will explore the interaction of control and consent in such virtual worlds.

Pinckard has been a long-term participant in digital culture through her website, Umamitsunami.com. To further her studies, last year she launched the website GameGirlAdvance.com, offering critical analysis of electronic entertainment. She also sings and plays guitar and keyboards in Dealership, called “every blogger’s favourite band.” Their electronic- infused hard pop has been downloaded far and wide from the

well-regarded weblog-enabled web site Dealerkids.com. She lives in Berkeley and in Tokyo.
