A possibly critical meeting of the Finance and Government Operations
Committee of the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors is being held this
Friday Jan. 31 from 1:30 - 3:30 in San Jose at 70 W. Hedding St., 1st floor in the Isaac Newton Center. The purpose of the meeting is to decide whether or not to affirm the recommendation by the Registrar of Voters to purchase Sequoia touchscreen voting machines.
Opponents of the purchase have stated that, the problem with these machines is that they do not provide a voter verifiable audit trail. Consequently, there is no way to do a meaningful recount if error or fraud is suspected. Even worse, errors or outright election fraud may go undetected. For more background on this issue, please see http://verify.stanford.edu/evote.html (which also has links to a statement and a list of endorsements by technologists).
Members of the public will be allowed 2-3 minutes each to comment. This a decision could influence many other communities in California and elsewhere who are currently in the process of making similar decisions.
