How is the Internet used to violate the federal securities laws?  How does the SEC respond?  The presentation covers "pump and dump" stock manipulations, offering fraud and hoax press releases.  We also discuss investigative issues that arise as a result of the Electronic Communications Act, the Cable Communications Policy Act and the recently enacted USA PATRIOT Act.

Short Biographies

LISA A. GOK

Lisa A. Gok has been the Assistant Regional Director for Enforcement in the Pacific Regional Office of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission since 1994.  In that position she oversees the enforcement activities of two branches of attorneys, including the Internet Branch, which focuses solely on Internet fraud.  Ms. Gok is a graduate of Princeton University and Columbia University School of Law.  Before joining the Los Angeles office, she worked at the Commission's Headquarters in Washington, D.C., in both the Office of General Counsel and the Division of Enforcement.  Before joining the Commission, Ms. Gok was a litigation associate at Howrey and Simon in Washington, D.C. and an Assistant United States Attorney in the Criminal Division of the U.S. Attorney's Office in the District of Columbia.

ROBERTO A. TERCERO

Roberto Tercero '89 is Senior Counsel in the Commission's Internet Enforcement Branch in Los Angeles.  His practice focuses upon Internet securities fraud related to microcap stocks.  Bob has been with the Commission since 1995.  Previously, he was an associate in the Litigation Department at Heller Ehrman White & McAuliffe.
