DECISIONS

Superior Courts

Supreme Court, 2012[Defamation, Dangerous Speech, Blaphemy, hosting provider, Google, YouTube, blocking order, Innocence of Muslim] [ordering that the "Innocence of Muslims" film trailer had to be reremoved from YouTube and never be made available again in the future. Following this decision, YouTube has been fully blocked in Pakistan since September 2012. The Pakistani governbment temprarily blocked YouTube earlier in 2012 and 2011 as well.]

Lower Courts

High Court of Lahore, Bytes for All, May 13, 2014[Google, You Tube, blocking order, Innocence of Muslims] [stating that YouTube must be unblocked in Pakistan, in response to a challenge by the Pakistani NGO Bytes for All. YouTube was previously blocked by the government in September 2012, in response to a controversial "innocence of Muslims" film trailer. The High Court found that, instead of blocking the entire website, a warning message could be displayed. However, the High Court cannot act until the Supreme Court clarifies its previous order (see above). Bytes for All must now seek clarification on the order. The Supreme Court could either provide this, after which the case would return to the High Court and the unblocking of YouTube can be ordered, or the Supreme Court itself could order the unblocking.] [See also Global Voices Online blog post] Pakistan Telecommunications Authority, Twitter Blocking Account Request, May 2014 [Twitter bloking blasphemous content upon Government request and restoring it] [see blog post]
