Aleecia M. McDonald is the Director of Privacy at CIS. Previously, she was a privacy researcher and Fellow at the Stanford Center for Internet and Society. She also consults for Mozilla on their "Do Not Track" web browser feature, and co-chairs the W3C Tracking Protection Working Group. Arvind Narayanan is an Assistant Professor at Princeton's Department of Computer Science and Center for Information Technology Policy and an Affiliate Scholar at the Stanford Law School Center for Internet and Society. He studies information privacy and security, and has a side-interest in tech policy. Brian Hayden Pascal is a lawyer, consultant, and general solver of problems who is particularly interested in the challenges that arise when scientific innovation and technical ability outstrip extant intellectual, legal, and ethical frameworks. Brian has served in a variety of roles at the interface of technology, law, policy, and business. He has been a civil liberties engineer with Palantir Technologies, a cybersecurity and privacy consultant with IBM, and an attorney with the firm of Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati. Now that Microsoft has come to the party and is publishing a regular transparency report, there is a meaningful amount of publicly-available data about government requests for online records. It is not hard to imagine why robots raise privacy concerns. Practically by definition, robots are equipped with the ability to sense, process, and record the world around them. Robots can go places humans cannot go, see things humans cannot see. Robots are, first and foremost, a human instrument. And after industrial manufacturing, the principal use to which we’ve put that instrument has been surveillance.
