We stand on the cusp of a revolution in transportation not seen since cars started replacing the horse and buggy. Autonomous vehicles (AVs) hold the promise of saving tens of thousands of lives each year in the U.S. (and many more worldwide), reducing traffic, saving energy, and providing mobility to those who cannot drive conventional cars. Google is now testing a completely automated car that doesn't have a steering wheel, accelerator, or brake.

Nonetheless, AVs will crash and product liability litigation is inevitable. State and federal law will need to change in order to accommodate AVs. Legal issues will arise in many areas of the law, including torts, insurance, transportation and communications administrative law, privacy, and data security. This panel will highlight collaboration among the ABA Section of Science & Technology Law, industry, and academia to educate lawyers, technologists, business people, and the public about the legal aspects of autonomous driving.

This program will cover the collaboration between industry and academia in educating lawyers, technologists, business people, and the public about the legal aspects of autonomous driving. This program will help you:

  • Learn about the state of autonomous driving technology and how close we are to seeing mass-market sales of driverless cars and trucks
  • Explore the legality of selling and driving autonomous vehicles
  • Understand how industry hopes to commercialize autonomous vehicle technology, while managing risk
  • Examine the litigation and insurance impact of autonomous vehicles from product liability, privacy violations, and data security breaches
