During the last Congress, Representative Lofgren introduced The Public Domain Enhancement Act, legislation that would allow all copyrighted works to enter the public domain 50 years after publication unless the owner paid a $1 renewal fee and registered the work in a copyright office database. Clinic students will learn first hand how lawyers help “a bill become a law” by working with the coalition of organizations promoting the legislation, manning the Act’s website and blog, and working with Congressional staff to prepare documents explaining the legislation to non-lawyers, including a FAQ, a section by section analysis, case stories on the bills potential effects, press releases and other related documents.
