The Powder & the Glory premieres on PBS

The Powder & the Glory, part of the Fair Use Project's Documentary Film Program, will have its broadcast premiere on PBS Monday March 23, 2009 at 10PM (check local listings) as part of Women's History Month.

The Powder & the Glory tells the story of two of the first highly successful women entrepreneurs in America, Elizabeth Arden and Helena Rubinstein. One hundred years ago these women immigrated to the United States and, starting with next to nothing, created what is today the $150 billion global health and beauty industry. They lived and worked only blocks apart but by design they never met. They were fierce rivals. Their competition drove them both to great creativity and success.

That's so neat Brandy, I'm not sure if I'll be able to receive it, and watch, where I live, but I'll do my best to check it out if I can figure out the time-zone differences. Lol.

But, great idea, and I'm so glad it's airing! Congrats!

"The Powder & The Glory" was such a good documentary that I did some extra research on Helena Rubinstein. I learned that she opened her first salon in 1902 in Australia. She earned 12,000 British Pounds in her first two years selling her cold cream. In 1908, she had earned at least 100,000 British Pounds which she took to England and invested in another salon and then yet another in Paris. Upon her death in New York in 1965, her business was estimated to be worth $60 million dollars.

She succeeded with high-quality products, remarkable energy and imagination, a doctrine of beauty, skin care, consultation, prescription and treatment. She sold women cold cream and dreams. She rapidly built, managed and grew her empire in the largest growth industry of the twentieth century: beauty products. Entrepreneurs take heed!

Thank you, Brandy, for promoting this documentary here. If more people would watch educational programs like this instead of The Lost Loser, baseball, One Life to Live or whatever it is they watch, this world would be a far better one. My great-grandmother learned much from Helena Rubenstein. They actually worked together in 1918 and my grandmother now produces the best wrinkle cream in the world, thanks to training from Helena.

This doc. was a great case study of how to start & run a business. I learned a lot from it and want to start my own business building and marketing computers. The biggest problem I'm having is that it looks like all the business credit has dried up because I can't get a loan to move forward. Someone please tell me again why all those trillions of dollars were given to the banks? Wasn't it so they would start loaning out money so we could build businesses so we could get the economy going again?
