Professor Patrick Lin discusses key ethical, legal, and policy challenges in cyberwarfare. This event is part of the “IT, Ethics, and Law” lecture series, co-sponsored by the High Tech Law Institute.

Can hacking be an act of war? This talk will address key ethical, legal, and policy challenges in cyberwarfare–an increasing worry for a wired society. We will also look at the curious absence of cyber in the debates about autonomous weapons systems, from the US Dept. of Defense here at home to the United Nations globally.

Lin is the director of the Ethics and Emerging Sciences Group at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, where he is an associate philosophy professor. Previously, he held academic appointments at Stanford’s School of Engineering, U.S. Naval Academy, and Dartmouth College. He has provided briefings and counsel to the U.S. Dept. of Defense, Dept. of Homeland Security, CIA, United Nations, UNIDIR, National Research Council, and several major Silicon Valley technology companies.
