They spelled my name right

Today the San Francisco Chronicle ran a nice story about the Open Source Yoga Unity case.
It's hard to write a story about a mediation that's confidential. There's one mistake in the piece: Bikram did not "win" his suit against Yoga Studio, he settled for an undisclosed amount. Yoga Studio is still open for business teaching in the same style. There's no dispute that Bikram can copyright his book about how to do Bikram yoga. The dispute is whether he can get a patent-like monopoly on teaching public domain poses in a specific order that's chosen for functional reasons, each pose preparing the body for poses to come.
For me, personally, this case is just as much about defending the integrity of the patent law, which is supposed to be the exclusive way to protect inventions, methods and processes, as it is about defending the limits to copyrightable subject matter. Namaste.
