Wikis in law

by Colette Vogele, posted on May 9, 2007 - 6:55am

Robert Ambroji has a nice article in Law.com's In-House Counsel section on wikis and their use in the legal profession. He highlights a number of law-related wikis that may be good resources for attorneys. Ones I especially like are EFF's Internet Law Treatise, Cornel's Wex, and CC's wiki. THough I haven't used it much, I'm curious how much success WikiPatents will have in improving the quality of issued patents.

Help to Save Net Radio

by Colette Vogele, posted on April 27, 2007 - 9:35am

After the recent Copyright Royalty Board decision (pdf), which set the new rates for webcasting (web radio and any other streaming audio over the internet), it became clear that many web radio stations would fold under the weight of the new rate structure. For college radio, the situation is even more dire.

A download is not a "performance"

by Colette Vogele, posted on April 26, 2007 - 7:09am

Haven't had a chance yet to read the full opinion yet, but the bottom line of this important ruling from the S.D.N.Y. is that a "download" of a file embodying a particular song is not a "public performance" of that song under the copyright act.

Digital music - how did we get here?

Matt Burrows, one of my co-fellows here at CIS, gave a good talk today about how we ended up where we are today in the world of digital media. These are my notes from his talk:

Some initial caveats:
-these are his personal comments, not those of apple
-he's not an engineer -
-can't comment on litigation at apple etc.

Video on the Net - Video Policy

by Colette Vogele, posted on March 22, 2007 - 5:24pm

I spoke today about fair use and video policy at the Video on the Net conference in San Jose. My slides are available in flickr. It was great to see Denise, and meet our co-speakers Jonathan Askin and Jonathan Taplin. Denise's slides (which are much more entertaining than mine!) are available in her flickr stream.
